What is Science?
Science is asking questions & searching for answers. It is a process of gathering knowledge about the natural world.
Branches of Science
Investigation into the Branches of Science, produces a bit of uncertainty. It seems people can't really agree on how to group science. (Do an internet search for Branches of Science & you will understand.) For the purpose of this course, there are 4 major branches of science & then an "other" category. We will be learning a little bit about each of them. This will help you, when you get older, to decided what science course you will want to take in high school & college. Maybe it will even help you decide what career in science you might want to pursue.
PhysicsThe science that deals with matter, energy, motion, & force.
|
ChemistryThe science that deals with the composition and properties of substances & various elementary forms of matter.
|
BiologyThe science of life or living matter in all its forms & phenomena.
|
Earth/
|
Other Science?Any science that does not appear to fit under the other categories.
|
The Scientific Method
Scientific Method - a method of research in which a problem is identified, data are gathered, a hypothesis is formed from collected data & the hypothesis is tested. For all the experiments that we do, there are 7 steps that will be followed.

Science Speak...Speak ScienceThis year you will compile a science dictionary entitled, SCIENCE SPEAK - A Guide to All Terminology from the Realm of Science. In this book you will define in words &/or pictures important science terms that you will be given in class. You may also add any additional science words that you feel are important.

Math? Math? Math! I Thought This was Science?!?!?!
For the most part, its pretty tough to be a top notch scientist if you can't do math. In this class we'll spend some time at the beginning reviewing/learning some math that you need to know if you are going to conduct experiments & blow things up. If you feel like you are in need of some extra math practice, speak up & get yourself some extra help.
A few words about the Metric System:
Did you know that only 3 countries in the world do not use the metric system!?!? They are USA, Myanmar (Burma) and Liberia. Scientists around the world, including those in these 3 countries, use the metric system, & we will, too. Once you learn it, the metric system is actually easier to work with than standard/custom measure.
Science Safety
Directions about safety make sure everyone is safe & on the same path. A lost scientist is a disaster waiting to happen! Before you begin any science experiment, review the safety steps.
1. Eating and drinking in the laboratory is not allowed.
2. Follow all instructions carefully. If you're uncertain, ASK!
3. Safety goggles must be worn to protect your eyes.
4. Long hair must be tied back.
5. Leave all your belongings off the lab table.
6. To avoid accidents, always walk.
7. When leaving a lab station, push chairs in.
8. Speak in a voice that can only be heard by your lab partners.
9. Clean up. Put away all your equipment. Clean your lab table. Place waste materials in the correct containers.
10. Wash your hands.

Science ToolsThe tools a scientist works with depends on the field of science that he/she works in. View the slide show to see some of the tools that will be used in our classroom.
