Sir Isaac Newton
Sir Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727) was one of the most influential scientists of all time. He came up with many theories & contributed ideas to many different fields including physics & mathematics. For the purpose of 6th grade we will focus on the laws of motion that he proposed in 1665. These Laws of Motion help to explain how a plane flies.

Newton's 1st Law of MotionLAW of INERTIA: An object in motion tends to remain in motion, and an object at rest tends to remain at rest. This means that there is a natural tendency of objects to keep on doing what they're doing. If an object is not moving, it will not start moving by itself. If an object is moving, it will not stop or change direction unless something pushes it.
|
Newton's 2nd Law of MotionF = M x A: Force equals mass times acceleration. This means that heavier objects require more force to move the same distance as lighter objects. Objects will move farther and faster when they are pushed harder.
|
Newton's 3rd Law of MotionAction/Reaction: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means whenever an object pushes another object it gets pushed back in the opposite direction equally hard. When an object is pushed in one direction, there is always a resistance of the same size in the opposite direction.
