Hey Team 6D Science Members!
The year ahead will be quite different for you. This is the beginning of something new for you; a chance to figure out who you are & how you want the rest of the world to see you. Let yourself, your real self, shine through. Imagine what YOU can do & then figure out how YOU can do it. Let me know how I can help!
Classroom Expectations: Imagine you wake up one day and everyone you encounter understands the ways in which you are unique and extraordinary. What if everyone recognized — and valued — your talents? Nobody wonders what things you can’t do very well; they just focus on what you’re good at. If that happened, you’d feel pretty darn good about yourself. You’d feel supercharged. You might even be psyched to jump out of bed every morning and get to school. You’d feel, in a word, strong. (Source) A Different Kind of Strength
Homework: I am not a fan of homework. This doesn't mean you won't have homework, it means I am not a fan of homework. I believe there is more to a person's life than slugging through hours of work after putting in a day at school. I try to keep homework to a minimum. Not everyone will have the same type or amount of homework. Don't compare what you have to do with someone else in our class or another class. People learn in many different ways & therefore people require different types of things to do to ensure that they will successfully learn something.
I expect that the adults in your life will be part of your life. This means there will need to be conversations, cooperative, informative conversations, where YOU keep the adults up-to-date as to what is going on in our classroom. Parent Portal will help you keep track of the assignments & the grades.
For the first quarter, since you need some time to get accustomed to the MMS, Team 6D has decided that HW will be accepted the day it is due. If it is late ONE DAY you lose 1/10th of the points you could have earned. If it is late TWO DAYS, it's another 1/10th lost. After this it is a zero. After the end of the first quarter, HW will only be accepted late if you have major monumental excuse.
Grades: Team 6D uses a TOTAL POINTS approach to grading. Every point, whether it is in homework, essays, tests, or whatever, is worth exactly the same as every other point. Add up a student's points, divide by the total possible, and you have his or her percentage. This percentage then becomes the grade. Parent Portal will help you keep track of the assignments & the grades. Barring any unforeseen technical difficulties, grades will be posted weekly.
Web Site: Science has its own web site. This is the place to go for all your science needs. It is a constant work in progress that grows with us as we go through the year. Go to our web site & find out what The Secrets of 6th Grade Success are. Check it out at: http://schooltoolbox.weebly.com/index.html
